Today I’m looking into 2 Samuel 9 NIV. King David has had much success in battle and is now looking for someone in Saul’s housedhold “…to whom I can show God’s kindness?” vs 5. He finds Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Jonathan.
King David has Mephibosheth brought to him – I am sure that he must have been terrified that the King was going to kill him. I’m sure that King David knew this too and his first words were “Don’t be afraid”. King David goes on to say, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” How awesome it that! I love King David’s heart for honoring God and others!
When we dig a little deeper into the scripture we remember that back in 1 Samuel 20 David had made an oath to Jonathan to “not ever cut off your kindness from my family – not even when the LORD has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.” vs14-15. After many years, and many battles, King David remembers that promise and makes good on it! He did the next right thing – the thing that was God honoring!
My prayer is that I will always do the “thing” that is God honoring. I will keep the promise that I made, or I will show kindness to those in need, or I will tell someone who needs to hear all about Jesus Christ! What a good lesson this is. I hope it has inspired you too!
